Future Heroes is a fast-paced trick-taking board game that’s meant to be easy to pick up and with a small footprint, perfect as the in-between game or when you’re in the mood for something fun and light.
I had the opportunity to work in various roles, ranging from Concept Art and Illustration to Graphic Design and the preparation of Print Materials.
Honestly, I didn't enjoy the process too much because I didn't have time to savor it, however, now that the game is finished and ready for printing, I can breathe a sigh of relief and say that I'm pleased with the outcome :)
The main point of the game, including the cards themselves, revolves around the markings on the cards that determine the strength of each card. In addition, the game rules dictate that you try to collect the strongest combination of a specific color.
What about color-blind individuals?
Therefore, we decided to create symbols in a way that someone who cannot differentiate colors can still identify the type of card that matches with others they need to collect. We chose to create symbols based on the hero's carrier, such as a wolf, bear, or fox. After conducting numerous playtesting, we concluded that the endeavor in this aspect proved successful.
During the design process, we encountered several issues that needed resolution.
For instance, in the case below, we had to create arenas (which are a crucial part of the game as battles take place within them) in a way that, when printed, they could fit into
the box. This meant they couldn't be too large, requiring us to compress the content
into a smaller space. We decided to leave fields/placeholders at the corners
where players could place their card combinations. Additionally, due to the positioning of all four players in this scenario, we had to place text on the map/arena
so that players could read it from any side.
